When Your Garage Door Springs Give Out

When Your Garage Door Springs Give Out image

Most people don't think about their garage door springs until something goes wrong. Then suddenly the door is heavy, jerky, or just won't open at all. It's one of those problems that sneaks up fast.

Springs are what actually do the heavy lifting on your garage door. The opener gets all the credit, but without a properly functioning spring, that motor is working way too hard - or not working at all. When a spring breaks or wears down, the whole system feels it.

What we pulled out here tells the story pretty clearly. A broken spring doesn't always snap cleanly. Sometimes it fractures in multiple places, sometimes it just loses enough tension over time that the door starts behaving oddly. Heavy on the way up. Choppy coming down. Slow to respond. Those are all signs the spring is on its way out.

Spring repair and replacement is one of the most common calls we get, and for good reason. It's not a fix-it-yourself situation. Springs are under serious tension, and getting that wrong can cause real damage - or real injury. This is work that needs to be done right the first time.

If your door has been acting up lately, the spring is usually the first place we look. A worn or broken spring is almost always the culprit behind a door that just doesn't feel right anymore.
