A worn or failing torsion spring is one of the most common reasons a garage door starts acting up. You might notice the door feeling heavier than usual, jerking on the way up, or making noises it never used to make. Sometimes it just stops working altogether. It's one of those things that sneaks up on you.
Here's what most people don't realize - the spring does the heavy lifting, not the opener. When that spring is worn out or snaps, the opener is suddenly working against a door that can weigh hundreds of pounds. That puts stress on the whole system fast.
On this one, we swapped out the old torsion spring and did a full tune-up on the door while we were at it. Getting the tension dialed in correctly is where a lot of DIY attempts go sideways. Too much or too little tension and the door won't travel smoothly - and at worst, it becomes a safety hazard. We set it right so the door moves the way it's supposed to.
After the spring replacement and tune-up, the door was running quieter, smoother, and balanced properly. That's the goal every time. A garage door should be something you don't have to think about.
If your door has been jerking, squeaking, or just feeling off, don't wait for it to fail completely. A spring that's on its way out rarely gives you much warning before it goes.
